The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has introduced a new application to their anti-camcording campaign. Make A Difference 4 (MAD4) now includes a multi-lingual interactive web application compatible with iOS and Android smart phones and tablets. The new web application is designed to educate cinema staff about the impact that illegal camcording has on the exhibition industry and what cinema staff can do about it. Read more…

To facilitate future growth of the annual Australian International Movie Convention (AIMC) which is hosted by NACO, we have appointed a dedicated Sponsorship & Marketing Manager. Christine (Chris) Pitcher has a long history with the cinema exhibition industry in both management and marketing roles, and is well versed in the AIMC from both delegate and organisational perspectives.

The Classification Liaison Scheme (CLS) is a joint State, Territory and Australian Government initiative aimed at improving compliance with classification laws. By educating industry about their obligations under the National Classification Scheme, the CLS works with business so that accurate and timely classification information is available to consumers.

In addition to checking for compliance, the CLS also deal with complaints (from the public and industry) in regard to compliance issues. Recently CLS have received complaints about the screening of films granted exemption from classification under the film festival exemption scheme and have brought this to our attention as an industry body representing cinemas. The NACO AGM was held on Wednesday 14 November during which the Chairman, Mr Peter Beattie AC, and the Board expressed gratitude to retiring Director, Mr Allan Stiles of Grand Cinemas Perth, for his contribution to the Association over the past 18 months.

In his stead, we welcome Mr David Pye, Ace Cinemas Perth, who will represent Independent Exhibitors.

Congratulations to the AIMC organisational team of Michael Hawkins, Amanda Cox, Freya Tienan, Graham Tienan and Richard Parton on the successful result for the Australian International Movie Convention which ran from 19-23 August 2012. Delegate feedback has been extremely positive.

Congratulations to NACO Chairman, Mr Peter Beattie, who was awarded an AC – as a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia – in the Queen’s Birthday 2012 Honours List.

Peter’s award was received “for eminent service to the parliament and community of Queensland, through initiatives in the area of education and training, economic development, particularly in biotechnology, information technology and aviation industries, and to the promotion of international trade.”
